Alumni Stories

Andrew Rhodes

Artist Management Alumni

How did your time at SMB help you in your current role as an artist manager?

SMB proved to be a valuable resource, both with the theoretical underpinning it gave me on the role of an artist manager and strategies, but also the networks and resources the course provided has been beneficial for me in establishing myself in a foreign city (I'm originally from Australia).

What are your professional goals and ambitions for the future?

I want to continue working with artists to develop their careers. As I'm primarily working with emerging talent right now, I'm excited to watch them grow and to be an active part of the process. I don't like to get too far ahead of myself, so my first goal is to have an artist sell out Brixton Academy.

What advice do you have for someone considering a career in artist management?

Jump in. Get involved. Go out and talk to people. There's no qualification you need to become an artist manager, so the best way to learn it is by doing it (with some guidance from SMB).

From your first few years in management, what are you most proud of?

It's still early days for me, but watching Tuvaband play to a packed (and silent) room at Mirrors Festival in London has been one of the highlights so far.

What should we be looking out for in the coming months from your roster?

A Norwegian artist we represent, Es May, is currently recording her debut EP. Expect to see that before next summer. I'm really looking forward to Tuvaband's second EP which will be out in the first half of 2018. Also look out for new music from Magnus Bechmann and an exciting project we've just signed called Idk Ariel.

What would you say to someone considering enrolling on to a course at SMB?

I'd highly recommend it. Whether you've been working in the industry for a while or are new to it all, the courses are up-to-date and highly beneficial in an industry that is rapidly changing. What you learn at SMB can separate you from your counterparts.
